DESCRIPTION

Before Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas, the science-fiction writers of the 1950s and 1960s were writing some of the hippest genre literature of the era. Here are three imaginative novellas from some of these pioneers of pulp science fiction.

Here are three more stories from the pioneers of the early days of pulp science fiction in this final volume of the Galaxy Trilogy series.

Across Time by David Grinnell. Unidentified flying objects are closing in fast, but Captain Zachary Halleck doesn’t finalize his move to protect the secret Air Force research station. Why?

Mission to a Star by Frank Belknap Long. Human-like aliens land on Earth and claim that they come in peace, asking for only complete freedom and Earth’s friendship, trust, and understanding for as long as they choose to remain.

The Rim of Space by A. Bertram Chandler (This is volume one of the Rim World series.) The Rim Runners explore desolate planets inhabited by intelligent amphibians, tea-loving lizards, humanoids, and a pre-industrial civilization in this first book in the Rim World series.

REVIEWS

“Some of the best science-fiction stories never get another shot at being heard. The production contains three novellas from the long-gone sci-fi pulp magazine Galaxy, which ceased publication in 1980. Narrator Tom Weiner not only vocalizes various human dialects and accents but also bizarre alien voices. He has the dramatic chops to transport listeners to the outer rim of the galaxy, as well as to a world in which strange whale-like humans live in water. Weiner successfully strikes a chord of anxiety in the story of human-like aliens who come to Earth bearing gifts — at a cost. Overall, Weiner’s performance helps make these stories sound as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.”—AudioFile

“As Asimov chronicled the Foundation, as Heinlein built his Future History, so Chandler constructs the epic of the Rim Worlds.”—Analog Science Fiction

DAVID GRINNELL (1914-1990) was the pseudonym for Donald Allen Wollheim, a science-fiction writer, editor, publisher who founded DAW Books in 1971. A member of the Futurians, he was one of the leading influences on the development of science fiction and science-fiction fandom in the United States.

FRANK BELKNAP LONG (1901-1994) was a prolific American writer of horror fiction, fantasy, science fiction, poetry, gothic romance, comic books, and nonfiction. He received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award in 1977.

ARTHUR BERTRAM CHANDLER (1912-1984 ) was born in Aldershot, England, and in 1956 emigrated to Australia where he commanded merchant vessels for Australia and New Zealand until his retirement in 1974. A prolific writer of science-fiction novels and short fiction, he received four Australian SF Achievement Award "Ditmars" for his novels, nearly all of which were published in the United States.
